Ask an Expert: How Can I Create an Inexpensive Wall Treatment in My Place?

At Avi Urban, our interior designer Marnie Galbraith is constantly on the hunt for cool new ways to charm to our new townhomes and condos. Always in the know on the latest design trends, she’s giving you some options to create a fun space in your home this summer – with customized wall treatments!

Here are Marnie’s suggestions for four super inexpensive ways to add major impact to your new Calgary condo or new Edmonton townhome:

1.       Paint It On with Faux Wall Treatments: We chose to paint a ticket to a baseball game on the wall. With a bit of tracing and maybe some help from an artistically-inclined friend, you can create a cool piece of art. This idea works really well in kid’s rooms, where you are trying to convey a theme and want maximum impact with little cost.

2.       Stencils Make It Easy: We like to use a painted wall treatment in a bedroom where you can use a stencil and your own shade of paint. This creates the look of wallpaper and gives you more customization. It also works well as a feature wall and in smaller areas like a niche or half-bathroom.

3.       Chalk It Up to A Great Wall Treatment: A chalkboard wall is a great addition to a kitchen or dining space. It gets the whole group of family or friends engaged in mealtime. Chalkboard paint is easily applied like a feature paint, anywhere you can think of. The “doodlers” of the family will love it.

4.       Add Warmth with Grass Cloth: A grass cloth feature wall is a great addition to any space, especially a dining room, a half bathroom, loung or master bedroom (as shown in the photos). Grass cloth can be applied just as wallpaper is, and is a great fit for anywhere that you aren’t going to be doing heavy-duty cleaning. It instantly adds warmth and texture to a space without making it feel busy or dated.
