It’s Clever Christmas with Avi Urban, and the showhome decorating team of Julie, Chloe and Alex!
We caught up with the decorating team as they trimmed the trees at the Homes by Avi offices. They’ve done up tons of trees in the showhomes and offices. Decorator Alex Scott shares some of their brilliant ideas to decorate the tree in your new Calgary townhome like a pro:
Pick the right tree: We prefer artificial trees when we decorate for Christmas. We always choose pre-lit trees, because it saves time and looks more put together. While real trees are traditional and smell great, they’re a challenge because of the mess, the hazard to kids and pets, and the annual investment. With an artificial tree, you’ll have it for 3-5 years, and it’s low maintenance.
Light it right: If you’ve chosen a real tree, we’d recommend about 5 strands (500 lights) for an average 6ft tree. While most people wrap the lights around the tree, we like to weave the lights between and around the actual branches. This creates more depth and lessens the amount of cords visible on the tree. Remember to light from top to bottom, so you can plug the lights in at te base of the tree!
Choose a colour theme: Using a maximum of three coordinating colours, you’ll add huge impact to your home. By picking a colour theme, it’ll be easier to decorate the rest of your home and create a coehsive look.
Vary your ornaments: We like to do a 50/50 split of balls and unique ornaments. You can also do a 70/30 split of balls and unique ornaments, depending on how large your tree is. The smaller the tree, the more even the split. We’re really into sparkly ornaments and birds this year.
String that garland: If you’re choosing traditional ribbon or garland, try mixing it up by stringing it from top to bottom this year. It adds a modern element.
Top it off: Tree toppers come in tons of shapes and sizes. If you’re doing a traditional red and green coloured tree, we’d recommend a classic angel or star. If you’re doing a more modern tree (like the silver and teal one we did), try using floral arrangements, bows, or other sparkly tree inserts.
Finish it with a skirt: This helps cover the usually unsightly plastic base of the tree, but it also adds to your colour scheme and grounds the tree. If you don’t have a skirt that coordinates with your theme, try using a furry throw or a cozy blanket instead!
