While we definitely love our exciting nights out in Mission, sometimes it is nice to just curl up at home with a good book. Step into Shelf Life Books on 4th street and you will instantly be welcomed by that perfect, comforting book smell. Well known for featuring works from local talent and for carrying hard-to-find authors, the shop always has a unique selection to choose from including fiction, history, biography, philosophy, and more. If you can’t decide or if you can’t find what you are looking for, the knowledgeable staff will happily help you navigate the shop (creaky stairs and all), will make recommendations, or will place a custom order for you.
In addition to offering up an impressive selection of books and art, Shelf Life also hosts great literary events like book signings, poetry readings, spoken word open mic nights, and music showcases. Up this week: Story Café and Single Onion.
Story Café with TALES (The Alberta League Encouraging Storytelling)
On February 24 TALES brings you their monthly Story Café, this time focusing on the theme of “wind.” Taking you on a journey through folklore, myth, and whimsy, five Calgary performers will showcase their take on wind through story and song. Event at 7pm. For more information contact Story Cafe host Doreen Vanderstoop at firstname.lastname@example.org or 403-816-6002.
Poetry and spoken word with Single Onion
On the third Thursday of every month Shelf Life hosts Calgary’s longest-running spoken word series, Single Onion. Past events have included lecture series, book launches, poetry readings, and open mic nights. This month join SO for a special event where SO founder Kirk Miles will present his latest volume of poetry, Moving Dust; a serious, uncompromising exploration of the Holocaust. Event 7pm February 25.
Whether you want to stay in for some much needed alone time, or if you are in the mood for some socializing, Shelf Life Books has a variety of options and events to satisfy your inner bookworm.
